New This Week at Laura’s Beads – February 15

Bead Circle Update

“Xs and Os Necklace” designed by Salli Rathburn
This necklace uses clever origami-like folds and hinges to take flat beadwork to a whole new dimension! Double triangle components enclose pearls just like hugs and kisses. We also like the occasional opportunity to finish stitched beadwork by incorporating stringing so that we can use some of the unique beads found around our shop that don’t often have a place in bead-weaving patterns.

Bead Circle Update

“Lyric Bracelet” designed by Regina Payne
This bracelet is a beautiful combination of pearls, crystals, superduos and seed beads. In the original pattern Regina has stitched the piece using two needles, however if you find yourself all tied up in your fireline when using two needles and would prefer just to use one, we’ll help you to make that easy adaptation. In this workshop you’ll be learning the technique of stitching a flat spiral. The necklace you’ll be making has a scalloped bottom edge and a variety of bead types that make it look much more complex than it actually is! This necklace took Best of Show in the 2018 Florida State Fair when entered in by one of our local beaders who stitched it up in our first colorway. Congratulations!

Beginner Bead Weaving Class: “Berry Band” by Deb Roberti
This wide and stylish cuff is another wonderful creation from Deb Roberti. It is the perfect piece for new beaders that would like to learn to work with 2-hole beads. Tiles are one of our favorite of all the 2-hole bead types because of the way they have a larger surface space to show off those beautiful Czech finishes!

Bead Circle Update

“Aurelia Collar” –  original design by Laura Graham; modifications by Laura’s Beads
The original version of this necklace is absolutely gorgeous, but unfortunately there were a couple of bead types that we did not carry, and some high quantities of others. Rather than give up on this beauty, we decided instead to make some modifications and create a new necklace with similar elements, but a little more accessible materials list. We are so pleased with the results! It’s elegant and surprisingly easy to stitch too. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

Classes Newly Added to Calendar

Intermediate Stitch Workshop: Flat Chenille
Flat chenille is just a little trickier than tubular chenille, but once you get the hang of the turnarounds it moves along quite nicely! It results in a sleek and smooth bracelet that feels good to wear. We’ve done samples in two different sizes so you can stitch whichever one you prefer, however we highly recommend the larger size beads for the first time you try the stitch.. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Beginner Stitch Workshop: Flat Even-Count Peyote
This Peyote Stitch Workshop will teach you how to stitch the flat, even-count version of this versatile technique. The beads in peyote stitch sit in a brick formation, however is is worked in a very different way from a brick stitch. For each stitch you’ll pick up a new bead and sew through the next high bead from the previous row. In this workshop you’ll be making a stylish tri-color striped cuff. Bead Circle Update

Tic-Tac-Toe Cuff by Melinda Barta
This contemporary geometric piece is comprised of rectangular frames made from cubic right-angle weave, then connected with 6mm beads to resemble a tic-tac-toe game! In order to make the cubic right-angle weave a little less intimidating, we’ve adjusted the pattern to use size 8 seed beads. In addition, we substituted some of the more unique materials used in the original design (2-hole cabochons; demi-rounds) with standard beads like 6mm rounds and crystals that we currently have available here at our shop. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

Pinch Me Not Bracelet by Maria Teresa Moran
This chunky bracelet is made up of a right-angle weave base embellished with pinch beads that resemble flowers and a line of 8mm beads down the center. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

Snowbird Season is Here!

A big warm Florida welcome back to all our friends from up north! We are excited to have you here joining us and we are offering a wonderful selection of projects already on our calendar and more projects in the works.

Please keep in mind that our sessions do tend to fill during the winter, so be sure to sign up quickly for anything that you’e interested in. Also please be sure to let us know as far in advance as possible if you have to cancel a session reservation so we have adequate time to contact the next person on the waiting list.

Bead Circle Update

NEW: One of our beaders recently brought in her completed “Drop Petal Necklace”  and we all just fell in love with the elegant simplicity of this piece. We decided then and there it needed to be a Bead Circle Project! After stitching your row of petals you can finish it off by stringing more beads or with chain, as you can see from our two samples. We know you’ll enjoy Deb Roberti’s easy-to-follow instructions too. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

There are many variations you can play with once you learn this stitch, using a variety of bead types for endless looks. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

New This Week at Laura’s Beads – December 22

Bead Circle Update

NEW: I was reminiscing recently about my first encounters with bead weaving and remembered a flat cellini bracelet I was taught that was called “Bump in the Road”. Cellini stitch, and really any form of peyote, has remained one of my favorite stitches all this time. I decided to sit down and stitch a flat cellini of my own that reminds me a bit of this first bracelet, but with a few more color variations and an edging that includes crystals for extra sparkle. Of course we just had to name it “Another Bump in the Road”. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:
