New This Week at Laura’s Beads – October 19

Bead Circle Update

NEW: Every year in November our Bead Circle stitches up a different ornament pattern. This year it was extra challenging to pick a project since Bead & Button surprised us with a special edition magazine loaded with bunches of gorgeous holiday projects! We finally settled on the beautiful “Beaded Brocade Ornament” by Kelly Wiese that connects sections of embellished netting with straps and drapes for an intricate finished piece.  Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

When you stop in be sure to check out this great magazine and all the other beautiful patterns that are included!

Reminder of some upcoming closing dates:

If you happened to notice a little gap coming up in our schedule, this is due to the fact that we have to take a brief break  while Laura is out having a scheduled surgery. We will be closed on October 25-27 and then again on November 1-3. These closings are Wed-Fri closings, so there will be no bead circle during those two weeks, however we will still be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays for shopping, as well as classes and open beading sessions for you to attend.

Until next time, have a sparkling week and happy beading!

Remember, if you are interested in making any of the projects shown in our emails, but are not in the area to join in, you can now purchase all the necessary supplies on shop.laurasbeads.com!

Many of the patterns are available through popular magazines or websites, which will be indicated on our website when you click on any of the projects above, so that you can view a materials list. If it’s an original pattern, simply email Laura at laura@laurasbeads.com and let her know what you are looking for. New This Week at Laura’s Beads – October 10

Bead Circle Update

NEW: We just love the versatility of the “Flower Garland Bracelet” by Regina Payne that is featured in Beadwork Magazine’s special Quick & Easy edition! We not only stitched up one using tila beads and bicones as shown in the magazine, but then we played with substituting pearls and firepolish beads for the bicones, as well as using Czech tiles instead of the Japanese tila beads. Every combination came out unique and worked up beautifully! We also found that you could just as easily stitch the bracelet on a continuous thread, rather than stitching separate components and connecting them, so it’s your preference.  Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

Intermediate Stitch Workshop: We specially designed these adorable hibiscus earrings for our 2017 Bead Cruise. They also happen to be the perfect project to learn brick stitch. Brick stitch is a unique technique that stacks rows of beads on top of each other in a brick wall formation using thread bridges. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Intermediate Stitch Workshop: In this workshop you’ll learn how to stitch Russian Leaves using diagonal peyote. They can be a bit tricky to master at first, but once you’ve got the hang of it they can actually be quick work up. What you do with them next is up to you! You can make up something as simple as a pair of earrings as shown below, or stitch an assortment of them to a spiral necklace and make a much more detailed piece. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Beginner Bead-Weaving Class: The “Sealed with a Kiss” bracelet by  Jann M. Christiansen is dainty and elegant. Depending on the colors that you choose, you can make it a casual everyday bracelet, or as elegant as a bridal piece. This is a wonderful way to be introduced to the single-row right-angle-weave stitch, a real staple of bead-weaving. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Beadwork Quick & Easy 2018 Arrived!

We look forward to this special edition of Beadwork every fall when it comes out. The best part this year is that our very own Kathy Cook had one of her designs featured! Check it out on page 54. Congratulations Kathy and thanks for mentioning us as a helpful resource!

Bead Circle Update

NEW: Flat Chenille Stitch has been one that we’ve been dying to sit down and play with for quite some time! It’s just a little trickier than tubular chenille, but once you get the hang of the turnarounds it moves along quite nicely. It results in a sleek and smooth bracelet that feels good to wear. We’ve done samples in two different sizes so you can stitch whichever one you prefer, however we recommend the larger size beads for newer beaders. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

This is the perfect next step for those of you who have learned the basics of peyote stitch in our beginner workshop and are ready to try the next step. You’ll start working with the smaller, size 11 Delica beads and creating a basic plaid design by reading a grid or chart. You’ll also learn how to use the Peyote Quick Start Card, which we think you’ll just love! Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Beginner Beading Class: Kumihimo is the ancient Japanese art of braid making. You’ll learn how to interlace strands of cording on a disc, while dropping beads into position. If you’ve never tried it before, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this very unique form of beading! Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

New This Week at Laura’s Beads – September 21

Bead Circle Update

NEW: The “Boho Chic Bracelet” designed by Melissa Grakowsky-Shippee caught our eye as soon as we received the latest edition of Bead & Button magazine and saw it featured on the cover. In fact we loved it so much we even selected a similar color palette for one of ours! The combination of the bead-woven centerpiece and multi-strand stringing is unique and doesn’t take long to assemble. For those of you who are “tool-a-phobic” and just panicked when you read the word “stringing”, don’t worry, it’s all done with fireline, no wire or crimps needed!. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

Classes Newly Added to Calendar

Intermediate Bead-Weaving Class: This adorable Halloween Tea Light Cover is the perfect decoration for any beaders’ home! You don’t need to choose between the four designs you see in the photo — those are all photos of the same piece taken from four different sides, so you’ll get all of them in one. We also have the glass tea light holders here especially for this project, so you don’t need to make a separate trip somewhere else to get one.

Beginner Bead-Weaving Class: The “Camille Bracelet” is a great way to start experimenting with the 2-hole triangular “Kheops par Puca” beads. Come join us and see how easily this bracelet works up! Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Second Date Added – Intermediate Bead-Weaving Class: The Herringbone Stripes Bracelet went over so well this month that we scheduled a second date for October! Herringbone is one of the favorite stitches here at Laura’s Beads. You’ll find that this bracelet is easy and relaxing to stitch, plus the added 4mm beads give it a little texture and a nice feel on your wrist. You can customize both the colors and the width for a whole variety of looks, including a wrap-around version!. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Beginner Beading Class: In this class you’ll learn how to use the Beadalon Jewel Loom. Start with a basic bracelet as shown, then you’ll have the skills you need to make any of the vast array of loom patterns that you’ve probably seen in magazines and on beading websites. You’ll also be using some traditional bead-weaving techniques to add a picot edging and attach the clasp, so although this is considered a beginner class, some bead-weaving experience is very helpful. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Beginner Wireworking Class: Learn how to crochet with wire to make this beautiful and organic looking bracelet. You can use an assortment of beads and wire finishes to create a wide variety of looks.  Plus once you learn the basics, Gail will show you how to make a wider version and even a necklace so you can go home and let your creativity run wild! Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

New This Week at Laura’s Beads – September 12

First let me say that I am so grateful that our little shop survived the storm and all is well here. I hope that all of you are safe as well. In trying to think about what we could do to help our customers (besides the normal “bead therapy”), we would like to extend an invitation to our customers who still do not have power to come in, relax and bead in the air conditioned classroom during the hours we are not currently holding scheduled sessions (see calendar).

As for scheduled sessions, we’ve got a LOT of stuff going on to tell you about, so make sure you scroll all the way down and click on the photos of the ones you like. From there you’ll be taken to the sign-up page. Hope to see you soon!

Bead Circle Update

NEW: The “Let it Shine Bracelet” is another beautiful design from our friend Ella Des (www.ellad2.com)! The lacy, open look gives it an elegance that is reminiscent of Ella’s “Maroon” bracelet from some years ago, while being a little simpler to stitch. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

NEW: The “Fan Flower Necklace designed by Kelly Wiese and published in Bead & Button starts with a classic twisted tubular herringbone rope, worn as a lariat. The wow factor comes in with the decorative fans attached to the ends! Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

Pattern Available: Remember the beautiful Trinity Pendant by Carolyn Cave we made recently? Many of you were asking about the pattern for the matching earrings that were shown in the photograph. Carolyn has let me know that the pattern is now available for purchase and you can email her at ladybeadledesigns@nucleus.com to arrange for your copy today!

Classes Newly Added to Calendar

Beginner Stitch Workshop: This Peyote Stitch Workshop will teach you how to stitch the flat, even-count version of this versatile technique. The beads in peyote stitch sit in a brick formation, however is is worked in a very different way from a brick stitch. For each stitch you’ll pick up a new bead and sew through the next high bead from the previous row. In this workshop you’ll be making a stylish tri-color striped cuff. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Intermediate Stitch Workshop: The trick to stitching multi-row right-angle-weave is to look for the pattern of squares you’re creating as you stitch. Your thread will be moving in a circular pattern as you build your squares, changing direction with each stitch. This basic bracelet, combined with Deborah Roberti’s wonderfully detailed instructions, is a great way to begin learning this sometimes complex stitch. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Rescheduled: Beginner Bead-Weaving Class: The sparkling “Jeweled Bracelet” designed by Deb Roberti (www.aroundthebeadingtable.com) is a perfect piece to begin learning how to bead weave! It works up easily and can take on a big variety of looks depending on what beads you choose, as you can see from the photo. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Beginner Wireworking Class: Learn this easy technique for making your own toggle out of wire, firepolish and seed beads! We thought this was a wonderful way to end off a beaded piece of jewelry with a unique and perfectly matching clasp. Though we have a wide selection of beautiful clasps here at Laura’s Beads, sometimes it’s hard to find the one that really works with your colors, or you just keep gravitating towards the same ones and really want something different this time — this is the class for you! Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Intermediate Wireworking Class: This wire wrapped pendant is a little more complex than the basic one that we offer on a regular basis. Now you’ll start learning how to use half-round wire to create small wraps around the square wire that runs the perimeter of the piece for a more detailed piece! Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Bead Circle Update

NEW: The Saba Bracelet” is another beautiful design from our friend Ella Des (www.ellad2.com)! The way the crescent beads arch along the edges of this bracelet is an absolutely gorgeous effect. The tubular netting technique means that it’s a relatively easy and quick to work up too. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

NEW: We just received a gorgeous selection of “backlit” gemduo beads and couldn’t wait to play with them! The effect is reminiscent of stained glass, the way they glow and reflect the light. Deb Roberti’s “Solitaire Necklace” from www.aroundthebeadingtable.com is the perfect design to showcase these beads. We also continue to carry a beautiful selection of Diamonduo beads, including some recently added subtle matte tones for an entirely different look. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

Beginner Bead-Weaving Stitch Workshop: This simple rope, made of two stitches per round, has a boxy shape that looks great in a variety of colors. We made a plain silver one that goes with everything and then we made one in a two- tone mauve, so it’s reversible. Tubular Herringbone has a wonderful, slinky feel and can be very addictive! Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Beginner Class: Enjoy making this simple wrap-around bracelet using memory wire, crystals and seed beads. This is a great project if you have never beaded before or if you need a quick “make and take” project for an event or gift. Click on the photo for details and to sign up:

Open Beading

This is just another reminder that we have a set of different Open Bead times towards the end of this month while Laura is out of town. We would very much appreciate it if you can come by during any of the additional weekday open beading sessions, since these are times where we will only have one staff person on hand and we hate to have people here alone. Many of you were kind enough to come by and keep the ladies company while we were on our Bead Cruise and it would mean a lot if you could do so again. Thank you!

Until next time, have a sparkling week and happy beading!

New This Week at Laura’s Beads – July 28

August Schedule

We have completed posting all our projects for the rest of August and we are excited about how many beautiful things we’ll be working on! We also wanted to mention that you’ll see a bit of a temporary change in the regular schedule towards the end of the month because Laura is going to be away visiting family for a week. The store hours will be the same as usual, but the session times and open beading times are moved around a bit for just that week, so just be sure to pay attention when you are signing up.

We also would very much appreciate it if you can come by during any of the open beading sessions during that week, since these are times where we will only have one staff person on hand and we hate to have people here alone. Many of you were kind enough to come by and keep the ladies company while we were on our Bead Cruise and it would mean a lot if you could do so again. Thank you!

Bead Circle Update

NEW: Though we are referring to this piece as the “Chevron Bracelet”, the original version was called “Cool Menthol” because the designer, Helena Chmelikova, had stitched it up in a beautiful combination of blues and silvers where it can be viewed on Preciosa’s website. We stitched one up in a rich combination of blush, berry and brown iris bead. This bracelet can be stitched up in any width that you prefer; we made ours with two rows of chevrons, which is a nice medium size bracelet. Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

NEW: When we saw the beautiful “Tara Bracelet” created by Nela Kabelova, the same designer as the Faenza Beaded Bead, we were very anxious to stitch another one of her pieces. Like with her beaded beads, this bracelet is made of components that can be assembled in a variety of ways, as you can see from our samples. The big difference is that we could easily stitch these all together rather than using flexible beading wire to complete the project. You can stitch them in different orientations (square or diagonal), put a variety of beads between them, and even make matching earrings. The components are double sided, so they have a nice thickness to them and you could even make them reversible by using two different colors of miniduos! Click on the photo for details and to reserve your seat:

Classes Newly Added to Calendar

Intermediate Bead-Weaving Class: “Susie’s Serpentine Necklace” is a versatile and comfortable necklace is stitched using tubular herringbone with stations of various beads to create an slinky, undulating look. You’ll learn how to take your tubular herringbone to the next level by using “increases” or “stitch in the ditch” techniques to add those special beads. Beginner Bead-Weaving Class: The “Twin Peaks Bracelet” from Deb Roberti can be made using either the unique, diamond-shaped “Silky” beads or “Honeycomb” beads, as you’ll see in our variety of stitched samples.
