New Product Arrivals

Over the past few years we’ve been inundated with new types and shapes of beads!  When we moved into our new larger shop, one of our goals was to continue to expand our inventory to include more of those new and unique bead types. We’re well underway to becoming your one-stop shop for everything you need for your latest creation. Just in the last couple of weeks several more nifty items have arrived…

Czechmate Beams

Pear-Shaped Drops

Union Beads in sizes 11/0 and 8/0

Unions take a Miyuki bead and give it a Czech coating, making an amazingly beautiful result

New Findings

This includes more styles of Elegant Elements clasps and Tierracast bails, as well as Rose Gold chain and earring findings (not shown)

Entirely New Selection of Stones

Many of you enjoyed shopping from our first selection of stones that were available during the month of November, but now a brand new selection has replaced those and I think these are even more beautiful than the last! We are excited about our new arrangement where we’ll always carry a nice variety of stones, but they will change out every 2 months to keep things fresh. We recommend that if you see styles you like when you’re in shopping, grab then while they’re available. At the same time be watching for announcements of when our new selections arrive so you can be among the first to shop.

Aromatherapy Lockets

These are the perfect gift for the woman on your list who enjoys using essential oils. Beautiful stainless steel lockets with a variety of cut-out designs hold a felt pad that can be infused with her favorite scent. The felt pads come in various colors as well to make them even more personalized.

Cost: This class is generously being offered free of charge by Marla with your purchase of her book and the beads to make the project. Please note that this Marla is taking up to 12 students, so this class will be larger than the standard beginner classes at Laura’s Beads.

Meet Marla Salezze, author of “Learn to Stitch Beaded Jewelry”

We are very excited to be hosting the second designer to visit and teach classes at our new shop — Marla Salezze! She’ll be joining us on Saturday, December 1 for an entire day of beady fun. There will be a beginner class from her book in the morning (we already have copies available for sale at the shop), a meet & greet book signing event midday, then an intermediate class in the afternoon.

We are in the process finalizing all the details of the event, so keep watching for more information very soon. In the meantime, be sure to save the date!

Our first “Off the Truck” sale at our new location

We had one of our suppliers stop by the shop late last week with a whole truck full of goodies!

Laura’s Beads Annual Holiday Party

We are pleased that our friends at Stassi’s Italian Grill will be hosting our holiday party again this year on Sunday, December 16, 1:00-3:30. As in past years, we will have the whole place to ourselves that afternoon to enjoy a great Italian meal and celebrate with beady friends. We will have more details and an RSVP form when it gets a bit closer.

Small Business Saturday

The Saturday after Thanksgiving for a long time has been a day dedicated to supporting small businesses in your community. However it’s important to remember small businesses all year round. In the past few years we’ve seen quite a few local bead shops close around the country as people turn to the internet for their supplies. Bead shops aren’t just retail stores, they are part of their community. We dearly appreciate those of you who continue to support our small shop and hope that you always continue to find the value in the personal service we provide. We promise to provide a fun atmosphere you’ll enjoy every day!

Plus, as a bonus, we’re excited to be hosting Marcia Balonis on that Saturday who will be teaching another class from her book!  (class is full at this time and on a wait list status)

Until next time, have a sparkling week and happy beading!

New This Week at Laura’s Beads – 10/23/18

Our email last week was completely focused on our new product arrivals and Venetian glass trunk show, so this week we want to update you on the all new sessions we’ve added to our calendar. We also want to thank all of you who attended our first trunk show — it was a real hit and I know I personally can’t wait to assemble my new beady treasures into pieces to wear!

Intermediate Class: Bead Embroidery Cuff
The latest bead embroidery piece designed by Dawn is a beautiful hard cuff featuring a Czech glass cabochon and glass buttons, fully beaded. Click on the photo for details and to sign up

Beginner Class: Viking Knit
Viking Knitting dates very far back, as you can probably guess from the name! It’s a method of weaving thin wire around a dowel in a way that creates a stunning result when completed and pulled through a drawplate. In this class the instructor has chosen a piece where you only make a partial section in Viking knit with the intention that you will be able to learn how to complete your piece and use the drawplate while in the classroom. Once you learn the technique, the designer will have pieces to show you that are made fully of viking knit and also pieces where beads are added to knit as you go, all to give you inspiration of where you can grow!
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

Beginner Stitch Workshop: Peyote Stitch
This workshop will teach you how to stitch the flat, even-count version of this versatile technique. The beads in peyote stitch sit in a brick formation, however is is worked in a very different way from a brick stitch. For each stitch you’ll pick up a new bead and sew through the next high bead from the previous row. In this workshop you’ll be making a stylish tri-color striped cuff.
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

Intermediate Class: Diagonal Cellini Bracelet designed Laura
This workshop will show you how stitching peyote with different size beads will make the 3-dimensional effect referred to as “Cellini” stitch to create this beautiful statement piece of jewelry.
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

Intermediate Class: “Faenza Beaded Beads” Designed by Nela Kábelová (www.gianelle.beadforum.cz), compliments of Beadsmith
We are so addicted to beaded beads here at the shop that when our friends at Beadsmith offered this fantastic FREE pattern, it was a no-brainer that it needed to be a class! There are no core beads needed for these; there are superduos and miniduos on the inside as well as the outside to give the bead a very firm structure. They work up quick and easy too! You can play with the colorways, either making each beaded bead the same or mixing up the colors, as you can see in the various photos. We even took some and strung them on ball chain to make a simple necklace.

Venetian glass is here! Plus other new arrivals…

The Venetian Glass has arrived

These beads are absolutely stunning and as you can see from the photos, the selection is huge! This trunk show is only taking place for 3 days, October 18-20. We’ve put some projects on our calendar that can incorporate these beads just to help you with a little inspiration. They’ll make a gorgeous focal point for your tubular netting or viking knit bracelet, to put between your beaded beads. Don’t miss out on this unique shopping opportunity!

More New Products Recently Arrived

All of the following products are available both at our store and online

Amos par Puca Beads pair neatly with the Paisley Duos, as seen in the latest edition of Bead & Button magazine. There are several projects we’ve got our eyes on that use these flat, teardrop-shaped 2-hole beads, so keep watching.

We been wanting to stock 2mm Firepolish beads for quite some time, but space was our enemy. Not anymore!

Coming up next — a beautiful new line of “Fancy Color-Lined” Delica beads is lined up to be stickered as I write this, so stay tuned!

Upcoming Classes

We’ve also been busy adding classes to our calendar, but didn’t want to try to pack too much into one email, so we’ll send more details on those in the next couple of days. New This Week at Laura’s Beads – 10/10/18

New Products Just In

Paisley Duos have arrived! We love these because you do NOT need a right and left bead since they are flat on both sides instead of domed like some other similar types. We got a BUNCH of great colors and they are available both in our shop and online.

We also restocked our Czech glass buttons, including some new, larger size designs:

Coming up next — a beautiful selection of 2mm firepolish is being unpacked and ticketed as I write this, so stay tuned!

Classes Added to Calendar

We’ve added a lot of new classes to our calendar lately, so be sure to check them out and join us for some fun and learning!

Intermediate Level:

Tubular Netting: We are offering this class complimentary and asking that you instead make a donation to help fight breast cancer, in honor of breast cancer awareness month. We will have a donation jar here at the shop and give the proceeds to Moffitt Cancer Center (see moffitt.org for more info).
Tubular netting is an easy, repetitive stitch that produces a substantial rope with a lacy effect. We used a combination of two different colors of 4mm beads and size 15 seed beads to create a swirled, plaid-like pattern. You can either make one long tube, or two shorter ones with focal beads in between. We then finished our piece with flexible beading wire and crimps. Although our featured bracelet was all done in pinks, you can stitch yours in whatever colors you like.

“Brique Bands” designed by Deb Roberti, www.aroundthebeadingtable.com
These bands are a fun, quick little project with several variations included in the pattern, so you can be creative. Make a Halloween piece (looks like candy corn!), a patriotic piece, or any other color combination that makes you happy. This is the perfect project for a beader who has taken a few beginner classes and would like to try an easy intermediate-level piece.

Cellini Ring
When one of our staff members here, Cessile, came in wearing a beautiful Cellini stitched ring, we knew that it needed to become a class project! In this particular version we used odd-count peyote to get the bicone crystals completely centered and a variety of bead sizes for just the right shape. It works up quickly and easily — we know you’ll enjoy this unique project!
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

“Scalloped Pearl Necklace” designed by Deb Roberti, www.aroundthebeadingtable.com
This necklace has a traditional and classic look. Deb used some creativity in her triangle weave to get the components that make up this necklace to keep turning direction, creating movement, and giving it the scalloped edge.

“Step it Up Bracelet” base by Kathy Simonds, compliments of Starman; embellishment by Laura
We really loved Kathy’s use of several types of 2-hole beads, including crescents and bricks, to make the sleek look of the base of this bracelet. She then added a subtle embellishment, which is perfect for beginners stitching this piece. However if you would like to dress it up a bit more with the detailed embellishment shown in the photo, Laura’s add-on tutorial will help you accomplish that . We think it produced quite a beautiful group effort!

Perfect for Beginners:

Basic Bead Stringing – Learn how to repair your own strung jewelry
Learn the basics of stringing beads on flexible beading wire. You’ll play with design options with guidance from your instructor, as well as learn how to crimp and finish your piece. This is also the perfect class for people who would like to learn how to repair their own pieces of strung jewelry.

We will have food, cake, door prizes and fun!

We are also excited to have Marcia Balonis, author of “Lush & Layered Beadweaving” joining us for a book signing event from 1-3. We will have more details and begin taking registrations at the event, but spaces are limited and these classes will be first-come-first-served.

We hope to see you!

New Products Just In

The new products have been pouring in, however it will take us a little time to inventory everything, so watch for new goodies to be available a little at a time. This week we added:

  • Several more colors of Toho Demi-Round beads, which will be perfect for the Grand Duchess Bracelet (scroll down for details)
  • Mesh tubing which is perfect for putting inside Russian Spirals or Peyote with a Twist to give your piece a little more structure. We have both light and dark.
  • We also received the brand new book by Marla Salezze “Learn to Stitch Beaded Jewelry”, which is just perfect to beaders just starting out.

Keep watching as we continue to add new products everyday. We are particularly excited to introduce Amos par Puca and Paisley Duo beads in the next week or so. Enjoy!

Sessions Added to Calendar

Bead Circle (Intermediate Level):

Intermediate Level Class:

Russian Leaves
Russian leaves are stitched using diagonal peyote. They can be a bit tricky to master at first, but once you’ve got the hang of it they can actually be quick work up. What you do with them next is up to you! You can make up something as simple as a pair of earrings as shown above, or stitch an assortment of them to a spiral necklace and make a much more detailed piece as shown below.
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

Perfect for Beginners:

“Crystal Boxes”
This sparkling bracelet is wonderfully simple to make! Stitch single-row right-angle-weave and ladder to create a base of connected squares made of bugles, then embellish with crystal bicones.
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

Basic Kumihimo with Beads
Kumihimo is the ancient Japanese art of braid making. You’ll learn how to interlace strands of cording on a disc, while dropping beads into position. If you’ve never tried it before, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this very unique form of beading!
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

“DNA” Spiral Rope
This Stitch Workshop will teach you how to create a beaded spiral rope. There are many types of spiraling techniques, however this particular spiral is often referred to as a “DNA” spiral because of the loops all rotating around a beaded core. This soft and flowing necklace is wonderful for combining with your beaded pendants, or to simply make a casual bracelet.
