New This Week at Laura’s Beads – May 16

Events Newly Added to Calendar

We’ve added another batch of projects to our June calendar! We’ll start by telling you about a few projects for the Beaders with some experience, but keep scrolling down if you are a beginner — we offer something for everyone.

For Beaders with some experience:

Advanced Bead Circle: “Wrap Around My Heart” Bracelet by Helena Tang-Lim
When one of our beaders brought in a copy of this unique and beautiful pattern, we all fell in love! You begin by building a sturdy 3-dimensional heart using cubic right-angle weave stitch, then add straps that wrap all the way around your wrist and feed through the center of the heart. (If you haven’t done cubic right-angle weave before, we highly recommend you start by taking our cubic right-angle weave workshop before trying this piece)
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

Intermediate Bead-Weaving Class: “Half-Tila Herringbone Bracelet”
This bracelet is smooth, slinky and very comfortable to wear! The technique is simple — just flat herringbone with half-tila and size 15 seed beads. You can also do a little chunkier version with brick and size 11 seed beads. (If you haven’t done herringbone before, we highly recommend you start by taking our beginner herringbone workshop before trying this piece)
Click on the photo for details and to sign up

Intermediate Stitch Workshop: Cubic Right-Angle Weave
Cubic right-angle weave is a tricky stitch to master at first, which is why we offer this workshop where you aren’t actually making a finished piece of jewelry, but simply concentrating on learning the technique. You begin by creating a 6-sided box, then continue to stitch off one side of that box to create the next box. You’ll be working with two different colors of size 8 seed beads since that’s the easiest way to learn. Once you master the stitch there are so many amazing designs out there (including the Heart Wrap above) that you’ll feel comfortable tackling — this will open up a whole new world of beading for you!

Perfect for beginner Beaders:

Beginner Bead-Weaving Class: “Crystal Chain Bracelet” by Deb Roberti
You’ll love the elegant simplicity of this bracelet, along with the easy-to-understand instructions written by Deborah Roberti. A delicate combination of bicone crystals, glass firepolished beads and seed beads — people won’t be able to believe that you’re just a beginner when you show them you made one of these!

Beginner Stitch Workshop: Flat Herringbone
“Herringbone Stitch, sometimes referred to as Ndebele herringbone after the South African tribe that created it, has great texture. You start with a ladder-stitched strip of beads, then work back and forth across the row, adding two beads at a time. The pattern of sewing up and down through the beads tilts the pairs of beads towards each other, created stacked columns, The striped pattern of this bracelet emphasizes the columns and allows you to play with your favorite colors.” from Lesley Weiss’s book, “The Absolute Beginners Guide to Stitching Beaded Jewelry.

Beginner Bead-Weaving Class: “Bon Bon Beads” by Emi Yamada, Starman TrendSetter

New This Week at Laura’s Beads – May 9

As we have been saying goodbye to our snowbird friends and getting ready for the lazy days of summer, there are still so many new and interesting things going on here at our little bead shop! There are fun projects (my favorite is the flip flop pendant) and new beads (carrier beads are FINALLY here) so read on for all the details!

Newly Arrived

Carrier beads are one of the latest crazes in beading! They are rectangular, 2-hole, with a flat bottom and a domed top, typically used as a base for a peyote tube. We can’t wait to start playing with them here at the shop!

Here’s a photo of a completed piece by Jill Wiseman to show carrier beads in action:

We also got some new 18mm Czech glass cabochons that look very much like stone, but are much easier to bezel due to the precise sizing. Look on our next email for an upcoming class to make the Deb Roberti “Starflower Pendant” using these cabochons in place of the rivolis for a unique look.

All the beads and cabochons shown above are sold both in our store and online. Simply click on the images to go directly to our online store.

Events Newly Added to Calendar

Intermediate Level:

Bead & Button Circle: Flip Flop Pendant by Diane Hertzler
These adorable flip-flop pedants are the perfect piece to wear here in Florida where we’re lucky enough to enjoy flip-flops year round! You can make the larger pendant with size 11 seed beads, as seen in the original pattern, or you can make a smaller version using Delica beads.

Bead & Button Circle: “Hilton Head Bracelet” by Michelle Leonardo
Inspired by the Hilton Head Sea Pines lighthouse in South Carolina, these striped bracelets are perfect for stacking! The artist made the original version as a bangle, however if you prefer to wear a bracelet with a clasp, we’ll show how you can easily make that modification. When we completed our bracelets in darker colors than the ones shown in the magazine, it occurred to us that these could actually be made into something that a guy could wear with the right color selections. So if you’ve always been wondering what bead weaving piece you could make for the guy on your gift list, give these a try!

Intermediate Bead-Weaving Class: “Peyote with a Twist” by Gerlinde Lenz
The new “Peyote with a Twist” technique is the latest craze all over the web! The finished piece will look very similar to bead crochet without all the headaches of crochet. In this workshop we’ll begin to learn the basics of the stitch using one main color of a size 11 seed bead and one contracting color to create a simple stripe. This is the version shown in Jill Wiseman’s video.

Beginner Bead-Weaving Class: “Printemps Earrings” by Deb Roberti
These sparkling, yet simple earrings pair up wonderfully with everything. If you’ve been starting to learn to do bead-weaving and have made a few bracelets and necklaces, you can use a few matching beads to make pairs of these earrings to coordinate with those completed pieces. If you haven’t done any bead-weaving as of yet, these are also a great place to start.

Events Newly Added to Calendar

Intermediate Level:

Intermediate Bead-Weaving Class: “Mosaic Bracelet” by Laura
This bracelet was inspired by looking at a photo of some beautiful mosaic tile work. This bracelet replicates the look of the mosaic tile using Tila beads, bugles and Delicas. Having straight edges, these beads fit together just perfectly. This pattern will instruct you the order to pick up each bead type, however you’ll be a part of the design process by deciding how to lay out your Tilas. The photo shows three examples, but the possibilities are unlimited, so get creative!

Intermediate Bead-Weaving Class: “Herringbone Stripes Bracelet” by Laura
Herringbone is one of the favorite stitches here at Laura’s Beads. You’ll find that this bracelet is easy and relaxing to stitch, plus the added 4mm beads give it a little texture and a nice feel on your wrist. You can customize both the colors and the width for a whole variety of looks, including a wrap-around version!

Intermediate Bead-Weaving Class: Beaded Vase
There are many beautiful designs for beaded vases out there. We particularly liked one by Busy Crow Designs  that we found several years ago, so we used some components of theirs to begin our design, then modified from there. We added extra bugles and made pointed drops to put a more contemporary spin on their more traditional original design. Since we originally made these in the fall, we also made a fun Halloween version! These make a wonderful gift.

Beginner Bead-Weaving Class: Peyote Workshop
This Peyote Stitch Workshop will teach you how to stitch the flat, even-count version of this versatile technique. The beads in peyote stitch sit in a brick formation, however is is worked in a very different way from a brick stitch. For each stitch you’ll pick up a new bead and sew through the next high bead from the previous row. In this workshop you’ll be making a stylish tri-color striped cuff.
